December 1st at 7pm: Professional underwater photographers Allison and Carlos Estape will share their renewed library of underwater photographs from Isla Cerralvo and Mag Bay.
December 2nd at 7PM: Humpback whale expert Dr Jorge Urga of UABCS will provide a guest lecture. More on Jorge:
The humpback whale is a migratory species. In winter, they come to the Mexican coast to give birth, take care of their young and mate. The humpback whale is protected by national and international laws, because, although its hunting is prohibited, it faces new threats such as entanglement with marine debris, collisions with boats and bad practices carried out during tourist observation. All of them represent a potential danger for the future of the population. Due to its biological, ecological, and economic importance, it is necessary that scientists, government, tourism service providers and tourists join the actions for the conservation of this species.
Biography
Jorge is a Professor of Marine Biology at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), La Paz, B.C.S., where he directs the “Marine Mammal Research Program” (PRIMMA). He is the expert on humpback whales in Mexico. He has published extensively in the scientific literature on marine mammals and marine conservation and is a member of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group, the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Society for Marine Mammalogy, and the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission.
