Mag Bay Marlin Magic

Snorkel and free dive the sardine bait balls with striped marlin - from exclusive Margarita Island lodging only Palapas Ventana can offer.

Magdalena Bay’s sardine run - in the water, not on a hook

Each fall and early winter, massive sardine bait balls gather off Bahia Magdalena and draw one of the Pacific’s great wildlife spectacles: color-changing striped marlin, sea lions, dolphin pods, seabirds, and the occasional whale closing in on the same silver tornado. Marlin Magic is a nature trip - snorkel, free dive, and photograph right in the action. No fishing. No spearfishing. Just the greatest show on Earth, underwater.

Exclusive lodging on Margarita Island - right in the action

Palapas Ventana is the only operator with exclusive Mag Bay house lodging on Margarita Island, positioned on the Pacific side where the bait balls form. Sleep on the island, launch early, and spend more time with the animals instead of long daily runs from far-away resorts. No one else can put you on Margarita Island the way we do - it is our private Mag Bay outpost, and it is the edge that turns a good ocean safari into an in-the-action week.

Combo itineraries pair specialty casita nights at Palapas Ventana (La Ventana / Sea of Cortez) with Mag Bay house nights on Margarita Island, all meals, and Pacific boat days focused on snorkel and freedive access to bait balls and pelagics.

Built for photographers, freedivers & snorkelers

The best action sits near the surface - perfect for snorkelers and free divers who want wide-angle bait-ball frames, marlin color flashes, and sea-lion energy without scuba tanks. Bring your camera housing; our teams know how to position pangas for light, safety, and working room. Strong swimmers get the most from in-water days; boat-based guests still see leaps, bird stacks, and surface hunts from the rail.

  • Snorkel right beside working bait balls when conditions allow
  • Freedive with experienced guests under guide direction
  • Wide-angle underwater photography and videography opportunities
  • Early launches from Margarita Island to maximize animal time

Prepare

What helps on Mag Bay nature days

  • Your own snorkel set (mask, snorkel, fins) plus weight belt if you free dive
  • 3-5 mm wetsuit - Pacific mornings and wind can feel cool even when water is mid-70s°F
  • Warm layers and a wind/waterproof shell for boat runs
  • Reef-safe sun protection and seasickness medication if you need it
  • Camera housing if photography is a priority

Open-ocean conditions can be choppy. Strong swimming confidence is recommended for in-water time; watching from the boat is always welcome.
