Bird watching
Cerralvo Island bird & snorkel days with Prof. David Bird, plus an example Mag Bay gray whales & birds day, evening Science & Nature Series lectures at El Anzuelo, and East Cape naturalist guiding from Palapas Ventana.
Bird watching from Palapas Ventana
Join a boat trip to Cerralvo Island (Jacques Cousteau Island) for a snorkeling and birding adventure. Visit sites on and around the island looking for seabirds and shorebirds, then slip into the island’s best reef water for a look at the Sea of Cortez underwater.
Cerralvo Island bird & snorkel trip
Cross the bay to Cerralvo’s rocky shoreline and watch birds work the ledges, tide line, and open water. Between birding stops, go snorkeling on the best reef the island has to offer. Outings are hosted with expert naturalist guidance, including trips with Prof. David Bird.

Birds around Cerralvo
Look for boobies, cormorants, frigatebirds, pelicans, oystercatchers, ospreys, and a mix of shorebird and water species. Special targets include the endemic Craveri’s murrelet - found only in this region - and falcons that make some of the fastest strikes in the bird world.
- Boobies, cormorants, frigatebirds, pelicans
- Oystercatchers, ospreys, shorebirds & waterbirds
- Endemic Craveri’s murrelet
- Island rockeries and flyby action
Snorkel the island reef
When conditions allow, snorkel Cerralvo’s clearest reef edges for moray and garden eels, Moorish idols, butterflyfish, pufferfish, loggerhead turtles, and the usual Sea of Cortez reef cast.
- Moray & garden eels
- Moorish idols, butterflyfish, pufferfish
- Loggerhead turtles when present
- Clear island reef and rock edges
Gray whales & birds of Magdalena Bay
Sample structure for a potential full-day Mag Bay outing with Tim Hatler and Dr. David Bird - gray whales up close, plus birding across tidal flats, breeding colonies, and mangrove forest. Ask us when this style of day is running; it is an example itinerary, not a fixed weekly departure.
- Friendly gray whalesPanga time with Mag Bay gray whales - close, calm looks when whales approach the boat.
- Low-tide flatsNumerous wading birds and shorebirds feeding as the tide drops across Mag Bay shallows.
- Breeding coloniesHuge colonies of cormorants and frigatebirds, including nests with chicks when the season lines up.
- Mangrove forestWintering and local songbirds living in the mangrove edge and forest pockets around the bay.
Example only - timing, wildlife, and stops shift with tide, season, and conditions. Contact us for current Mag Bay birding options.

Science & Nature Series lectures
Between boat days, Palapas Ventana hosts evening Science & Nature Series talks at El Anzuelo restaurant - sample marine-science evenings that pair birding, reefs, and Baja wildlife with visiting scientists. A favorite bird-focused sample:

How Birds Do It!
An illustrative talk by ornithologist Dr. David Bird. Guests leave saying you may never look at birds the same again - courtship, nesting behavior, and the wild mechanics of how birds actually live.
Feathering One's Nest
Another Dr. David Bird sample: why birds use nests, how they choose sites, why some nest beside predators or in colonies, and the astonishing materials birds weave into homes for eggs and chicks - from 9,000-pound nests to gold eyeglass frames found in a house crow's nest and an ancient comb in a cormorant's nest.

Other Science & Nature evenings cover Sea of Cortez marine science - monitoring Baja's Aquarium of the World, giant mantas, whale sharks, and more with visiting researchers. Ask us for the current lecture calendar when you book.
