Johnny Carabajal
U.S. National Freediving Team athlete, competitive depth diver, freediving instructor, and former U.S. Army combat medic. Johnny runs Dive Within Freediving, offering personalized instruction for beginners, experienced freedivers, and spearfishermen. His coaching covers equalization, relaxation, body position, freefall, FIM and CWT technique, safety, and individualized depth progression.
Every Level, One Group
You do not need to be a deep diver to join. Johnny works with each participant individually, progressing at a pace that matches your experience and goals.
Beginners
No freediving experience needed. Start with breathwork, technique, and water confidence. Build a solid foundation before your first open-water dives.
Certified Freedivers
Refine equalization, body position, freefall, and FIM/CWT technique. Push your depth and comfort with coaching tailored to your current level.
Spearfishermen
Become more comfortable and confident at depth so you can enjoy the sport more, dive more efficiently, and make safer decisions in the water.
What You Will Work On
Every session is coached and individualized. Johnny adjusts the focus for each diver based on experience and goals.
Day by Day
Eight days from arrival to departure. Pool and shore practice, conceptual sessions, and three boat days in the Sea of Cortez.
Arrival
Airport shuttles from San José del Cabo (SJD) or La Paz (LAP). Settle into your bay view A/C casita, meet the group, and enjoy a welcome dinner at Palapas Ventana.
Breathwork & Foundations
Start on land and in the pool. Breathwork, relaxation, equalization drills, body position, and technique. Build water confidence and a solid foundation before the first boat day.
Open Water & Awareness
Move into shallow open water. Work with awareness, relaxation, and how you carry technique from the pool into the ocean. Individualized depth progression begins here, with each diver working at their own pace on the line.
Looking for Sea Life
First boat day. Drop into the Sea of Cortez looking for rays, turtles, schooling fish, and whatever the day brings. Training stays in the mix: safety, buddy procedures, technique, and staying relaxed at depth in open water.
Depth & Technique
A focused practice day on site. Freefall, FIM/CWT drills, equalization progression, and more breathwork. The goal is not a number on a dive computer. It is moving more naturally underwater, diving more efficiently, and making safer decisions.
Deeper, Quieter
Second boat day looking for sea life. Longer dives as comfort grows. When relaxation, technique, awareness, and confidence come together, the diver begins to move naturally in the water and connect more deeply with the marine environment.
Full Day in Baja Water
Final boat day. Shallow to deep, as the group is ready. Optional spearfishing training for those who want it. A full day of diving with coaching, safety, and time in the Sea of Cortez.
Breakfast & Departure
Breakfast at Palapas Ventana, then airport shuttles to SJD or LAP for your flight home.
Small Group, Supervised
This is a small-group clinic. Every water session is supervised, and Johnny works with each diver individually. No one is pushed beyond their limits.
At Home in the Sea
The greatest payoff from this clinic is not a number on a dive computer. It is what those skills make possible: moving naturally in the water, connecting with marine life, and feeling less like a visitor and more at home in the sea.
In the quiet of a breath-hold, distractions fall away. Freediving becomes a way to explore both the depths of the ocean and something within yourself. That experience is what keeps divers coming back to Baja.
About Johnny
Johnny Carabajal is a U.S. National Freediving Team athlete, competitive depth diver, freediving instructor, and former U.S. Army combat medic. His background spans competitive freediving, spearfishing, deep-water training, and safety, with experience training and competing internationally.
Through Dive Within Freediving, Johnny offers personalized instruction for complete beginners, experienced freedivers, and spearfishermen. A major focus of his coaching is helping spearfishermen become more comfortable and confident at depth so they can enjoy the sport more, dive more efficiently, and make safer decisions in the water.
For Johnny, freediving is also a form of inward exploration. The ocean becomes a medium for exploring both the depths of the sea and the depths of self. In the quiet of a breath-hold, distractions fall away and the diver is given a unique opportunity to explore awareness, emotion, perception, and consciousness.
Spearfishing Training
Want to apply your breath-hold skills in the hunt? Optional spearfishing training is available during the clinic. Johnny coaches spearfishermen on comfort at depth, efficient diving, and safer decision-making in the water.
